Things to Do

Buxton and the surrounding area provide the visitor with a wide variety of things to do and places to visit. Nearby are the famous Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Park and Buxton itself boasts many beautiful, historic buildings including the Opera House www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk, The Crescent www.cressbrook.co.uk/buxton/buxattr.htm and the former Devonshire Royal Hospital -

(now part of the University of Derby). However there is a wide variety of interesting things to do and see in the area here are some of our favourite places and things to do:

Enjoy cycle ride on the traffic-free Manifold and Tissington trails, cycles and equipment available to hire along the route www.derbyshire-peakdistrict.co.uk/tissingtontrail.htm

From Westlands B & B take a leisurley walk through the woods to Solomon’s Temple and enjoy spectacular views over Buxton or visit Pooles Cavern Buxton’s own spectacular show cave www.poolescavern.co.uk

Walk up Bishops Lane from Westlands and into the Goyt valley, www.cressbrook.co.uk/features/goyt.php see the remains of Errwood Hall and in May and June enjoy the beautiful colours of the Rhodedendrons all around the valley, or visit the hidden Dunge Valley gardens.

A short drive from Buxton towards Congleton is the pretty hamlet of Wincle, enjoy trout fishing at the Dane Valley Fishery, walk along the valley or enjoy a meal at the Ship Inn ( fantastic meals made with local produce and excellent real ales, Alison’s favourite place to eat!) www.wincle.org.uk/ship_inn.html

Visit the pretty village of Hartington, home to the Dairy Crest factory and famous for it’s Blue Stilton cheese. Visit the factory shop and sample the delicious Blue Stilton, and other specialist cheeses for yourself.

Enjoy a round of golf at one of Buxton’s two courses, the Cavendish course www.cavendishgolfcourse.com can be seen from the rear of the house and Buxton and High Peak Golf Club is located just off the A6 northbound on the edge of the town.
